Obverse: The obverse of the 10-cent coin from 1946 onwards typically features the portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States. The design, created by John R. Sinnock, the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, depicts Roosevelt in a realistic manner, with a clear focus on his face and distinctive details. The obverse also features the inscription "LIBERTY" and the coin's mint year. Roosevelt's portrait has become one of the most recognizable images on U.S. coins, though other coins, such as half-dollars, had unique portraits before 1946.
Reverse: The reverse of the 10-cent coin also underwent changes depending on the minting period. From 1946 to 1964, the reverse depicted an olive branch and wheat, symbolizing peace and prosperity, along with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Additionally, the denomination "1 DIME" and the mintmark were present.
After 1968, the reverse design changed. The new design, created by engraver Frank Gasparro, depicted the "torch, olive branch, and oak branch," symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength. These were significant elements of American culture and symbolism, expressing the national values of the United States. During this period, additional mintmark letters started appearing on the reverse.
