What is a "star" or "Star Note"?
The term "Star Note" refers to so-called replacement banknotes. These are banknotes that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) uses to replace misprinted and damaged banknotes before they go into circulation. Modern replacement notes look exactly like normal money, except that there is an asterisk at the end of the serial number instead of a letter (e.g. B12345678*). In older types of banknotes, such as Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates and Legal Tender Notes, the asterisk was placed at the beginning of the serial number.
Replacement banknotes are printed in different runs, which can range from 320,000 to 3,200,000 notes per run. The rarity of a replacement banknote depends on the size of the mintage and when it was used to replace a damaged banknote.
Replacement banknotes are a fascinating collector's item, combining both the history and technology of banknote production.
The obverse shows a portrait of George Washington, the inscription "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination. The Rewers depicts the Great Seal of the United States. The reverse also shows the face value of the banknote.
