What is a "star" or "Star Note"?
Deadline "Star Note" (star) refers to so-called replacement bills. These are the bills that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) uses to replace misprinted and damaged banknotes before they go into circulation. Modern replacement bills look exactly like normal money, except that there is an asterisk at the end of the serial number instead of a letter (e.g. B12345678*). In older types of bills, such as Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates and Legal Tender Notes, the asterisk was placed at the beginning of the serial number.
Replacement banknotes are printed in various runs, which can range from 320,000 to 3,200,000 bills per run. The rarity of a replacement bill depends on the size of the mintage and when it was used to replace a damaged bill.
Replacement banknotes are a fascinating collector's item, combining both the history and technology of banknote production.
