The 50 Hryvnia banknote (50 UAH) in circulation is an important part of the Ukrainian currency, widely used in everyday transactions. Issued by the National Bank of Ukraine, this banknote combines aesthetics and functionality, serving both as legal tender and an interesting collectible item. The 136 × 72 mm banknote honors its contribution to the development of Ukraine’s history and the building of its national identity.
On the front of the banknote is a portrait of Mykhailo Hrushevsky (1866–1934), author of foundational historical works that had a decisive influence on shaping Ukrainian national consciousness. As the first president of the Ukrainian People's Republic, Hrushevsky played a key role in Ukraine’s pursuit of independence.
On the back of the banknote is an illustration of the building of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, which Hrushevsky helped establish and led. The Academy became one of the most important scientific and intellectual centers of Ukraine, and its activities were crucial in the process of national revival.
To protect against counterfeiting, the 50 Hryvnia banknote features the following security elements:
Watermark with the image of Mykhailo Hrushevsky and the digital denomination "₴50," visible when held up to the light.
Security thread, visible in the light, with microtext “₴50.”
Tilt effect – the denomination "50" changes color depending on the viewing angle.
Optically variable ink – some elements of the banknote change color from purple to green.
Elements detectable by touch, including Hrushevsky's portrait, the denomination, and markings for the visually impaired.
Differences between series:
- Series 2 of the banknote features classic security elements and traditional color schemes.
- Series 3 introduces an enhanced tilt effect and clearer microtext, making the banknote more difficult to counterfeit.
- Series 4 introduces additional optically variable ink and improved graphic elements, offering a higher level of protection against counterfeiting.
