The obverse of the medal depicts America as an Indian princess offering the riches of the New World to Europe, represented by the Roman god Mercury. The Rewers is decorated by an eagle (designed by John Mercanti) holding a ribbon with the maxim "E pluribus unum" (Latin: Out of many one), referring to the unification of the states. Above the eagle are thirteen five-pointed stars, symbolising the thirteen colonies.
