Krugerrands are produced by South African mint Rand Refinery. They are a full-fledged means of payment, with a guarantee from the South African government as to the legality, purity of the bullion and the origin of the metal. This means that the South African Reserve Bank is obliged to repurchase the coins at the prevailing gold price.
Obverse is decorated with a portrait of the president, Paul Kruger, and the inscription "SUID-AFRICA" and "SOUTH AFRICA.".
Reverse depicts the springbok antelope, a symbol of South Africa. On both sides of it are numbers representing the year of minting, underneath it is written "Fyngoud 1oz fine gold", indicating the pure gold content.
