Banknote 20 Great British Pound - King Charles III (20 pound / 20 GBP) Circulated
The polymer banknote of £20 featuring King Charles III was introduced into circulation by the Bank of England on October 2, 2023. This was the third polymer banknote in the series, following the introduction of the £5 and £10 notes, and it continued the modernization of British currency by increasing its durability and enhancing security against counterfeiting.
Obverse of the banknote: On the front of the banknote is the image of King Charles III. This portrait is a standard element of all British banknotes, symbolizing continuity and tradition within the monarchy. Surrounding the portrait are the words "Bank of England" and the denomination "£20".
Reverse of the banknote: On the back of the banknote, there is an image of JMW Turner, a prominent British landscape painter. Turner, regarded as one of the greatest artists in British history, is best known for his innovative use of light and color in his paintings. His self-portrait, painted around 1799, is currently on display at Tate Britain. The banknote also features his famous work "The Fighting Temeraire," which is a tribute to the HMS Temeraire, playing a crucial role in Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The quote "Light is therefore colour" from a lecture Turner gave in 1818 is also included on the banknote, highlighting his innovative approach to painting.
Security features:
The polymer banknote of £20 contains many advanced security features designed to prevent counterfeiting and assist in identifying genuine banknotes:
Hologram image change: Tilt the note from side to side. Check the words change between 'Twenty' and 'Pounds'.
See-through window: Look at the metallic image over the window. Check the foil is gold on the front of the note and silver on the back.
Purple foil patch: A round, purple foil patch contains the letter 'T'. You will find this on the back of the note, directly behind the silver crown on the front of the note.
The monarch's portrait in the see-through window: A portrait of the monarch is printed on the window with '£20 Bank of England’ printed twice around the edge.
Silver foil patch: A silver foil patch contains a 3D image of the coronation crown. You will find this above the main see-through window on the front of the note.
Feel of polymer and raised print: The note is printed on polymer, which is a thin and flexible plastic material. On the front of the note, you can feel raised print. For example, on the words ‘Bank of England’ and in the bottom right corner, over the smaller window.
Print quality: The printed lines and colours on the note are sharp, clear, and free from smudges or blurred edges. If you use a magnifying glass, you will see the value of the note written in small letters and numbers below the monarch's portrait.
Ultra-violet number: Under good quality ultra-violet light, the number '20' appears in bright red and green on the front of the note against a duller background.
